Should you use feather or nylon shuttlecocks?
Feather shuttlecocks fly faster, decelerate sharply and give the flight characteristics competitive badminton is played on, but they break easily and cost more per game. Nylon shuttlecocks last far longer and cost less, at the price of a flatter, less precise flight. Use feather for matches and nylon for practice.
Flight is the reason feather still wins
A feather shuttle is sixteen goose or duck feathers set into a cork base. Air passes between the feathers, which produces very high drag and a distinctive flight: fast off the racket, then decelerating sharply.
That deceleration is what makes badminton the sport it is. Drop shots stop dead, clears land steeply, and the difference between a good and a bad length is obvious. Every competitive match is played with feather for this reason.
Nylon shuttles use a moulded plastic skirt. The skirt does not open the same way, so the shuttle carries further and drops less steeply. It is playable and consistent, but it is a different flight.
Durability and cost per game
Feather shuttles are consumable. A hard club match can go through several tubes, and a single mis-hit on the feathers can end one. Judge them by cost per game rather than cost per tube.
Nylon shuttles survive a great deal of abuse and can last months of casual play. For a school, a leisure centre or anyone learning, the economics are not close.
Speed ratings
Shuttles carry a speed number, typically 76 to 79. The number refers to the grain weight of the cork, and heavier shuttles fly further. Speed is matched to conditions, not to player ability.
Cold, dense air slows a shuttle, so a faster shuttle is used. Warm air or altitude carries it further, so a slower one is used. In an unheated British sports hall in winter, a 77 will often play short where a 78 is correct.

- For matches and serious practice, yes. The flight is what the sport's technique is built around. For casual games, learning, or anywhere shuttles get lost, nylon is the sensible choice.
- What shuttlecock speed should I use?
- Speed depends on air conditions, not skill. Cold halls need a faster shuttle, typically 78. Warm halls or higher altitude need a slower one, typically 76 or 77. Test by clearing full length from the back line.
- How long does a feather shuttlecock last?
- In competitive play, sometimes only a few rallies. A tube of twelve might cover a club session. Damage usually comes from mis-hits on the feathers rather than from normal clean striking.
